Celebrating Two Years of Ice Cream in Harlem
When we opened @sugarhillicecream two years ago, we spoke at length about the impact we wanted our business to have in Harlem, our neighborhood of 15 years.

We named the store after one of Harlem’s most historic and renowned enclaves and the place where we first lived. We designed the space to make guests feel welcome by including some of our neighbors’ faces. We hired and continue to hire staff exclusively from Harlem and the South Bronx. We collaborate with as many other local businesses as our business will allow; and we are committed to giving back to local public schools, local non-profits, and local education-based initiatives. Like everything else in our business and personal lives, we chose to bank locally with @carverbanknyc.
In a historically Black neighborhood rapidly changing, we wanted to make sure we kept the money from our business in a historically Black, like-minded institution in our neighborhood. Some of you may have heard of the 2012 NAACP report that said a dollar stays in Black communities for only 6 hours while it circulates in other communities for many and multiple days. We opened to fill a culinary gap so that Harlem residents didn’t have to leave their neighborhood to enjoy America’s favorite dessert — ice cream.
We are so grateful to Carver for including us in their newest ad campaign, which you can see for the next two weeks on the billboard on 125th St & Lenox Ave.
We feel immensely blessed to be ending our second year of business this way. We cannot thank the Harlem community enough for also keeping their money in their neighborhood by choosing to eat ice cream with us.
